Bach did not specify the instrumentation for his Art of Fugue, the brilliant testament that culminates centuries of music and the composer’s own creative life. But he could not have imagined the deconstruction it would undergo at the hands of his compatriot Johannes Schöllhorn two and a half centuries later.
