In this five-way conversation, organized around the premiere of the play “Nós, sozinhas” and the short documentary film “The Dark Knot at the Center,” we explore stories, memories, and experiences of women in Portugal and the United States seeking clandestine abortions. What are the narratives of informal networks of solidarity and knowledge that enabled women to access abortion? What archives—formal and informal—serve as the starting point for telling these stories today? And what are the ethical and aesthetic implications of the process of creating artistic, theatrical, and cinematic explorations based on these memories? This conversation features activists Andrea Peniche and Esmeralda Mateus, filmmaker Inês Pedrosa e Melo, and theater director Sara Barros Leitão, moderated by journalist Joana Ascensão.
