In celebration of the Bicentenary of the Birth of Camilo Castelo Branco, the Portuguese Center for Photography (CPF) and Opera Omnia are partnering to present the book Amor de Perdição on September 27, 2025, at the former Porto Prison and Court of Appeal (Antiga Cadeia e Tribunal da Relação do Porto).
Written in 1861, Amor de Perdição was one of the works Camilo Castelo Branco wrote while being detained at Porto's Old Prison and Court of Appeal, now the headquarters of the CPF. At that time, the writer was awaiting trial for the crime of adultery, which he had committed with Ana Plácido, his lover. She was also detained there, awaiting trial for the same offense.
To mark the bicentenary of the birth of this icon of Portuguese literature, Opera Omnia is launching a special collection with new, carefully edited editions of his major works. This collection is coordinated by Professor Cândido Martins, from the Catholic University, and aims to preserve and promote the literary legacy of Camilo.
Amor de Perdição, the book to be presented at the September 27 event, is part of a set of four editions already published by Opera Omnia in collaboration with CCDR-N – the Northern Regional Coordination and Development Commission. The cultural initiatives associated with the Bicentenary of Camilo Castelo Branco reaffirm the importance of keeping alive the literary and human legacy of this foundational figure in our literature.
