Anja Huwe is the iconic lead singer of the legendary forerunners of the post-punk movement Xmal Deutschland. After the band’s success with four albums on cult labels such as 4AD, Huwe pursued a career in the visual arts, without ever abandoning her passion for music through various creative platforms.

Invited by her long-time friend Mona Mur, a musician, composer and producer, Huwe reconsidered her decades-long hiatus from music and decided to join Mur in her Berlin studio. Together they worked for a year and a half, composing, playing and producing the tracks from scratch, which would eventually become the album ‘Codes’, released this year by Sacred Bones Records in New York.

The album features distinctive electronic sounds as well as Manuela Rickers’ unique Xmal guitar style. Anja Huwe’s return to the stage with the presentation of her exquisite solo album ‘Codes’, along with a solid selection of Xmal Deutschland classics in modern interpretations is unexpected, but long overdue. ‘Codes’ is the missing page in the history books of post-punk, the ink freshly spread across the canvas of decades – it’s the product of the relentless will to survive on its own terms.
