With nearly a kilometre of drawings, models, sculptures, objects and photographs, the C.A.S.A. exhibition is the largest ever held on Álvaro Siza.
The contents represent less than 5% of the archive donated by the architect to the Serralves Foundation, revealing both his prolific imagination - and capacity for work - and the construction of an interconnected topography of production, according to which continuous associations are established between buildings over time.
Architect António Choupina will reveal the secrets and curatorial challenges of this body of work, based on projects that have been realised, altered or yet to be built, which constitute a chronological sequence of the last 90 years spread over 9 sections. The seminal Family Houses give way to the People's Houses, which mark the 50th anniversary of the revolution; the catalysing Houses of Commerce are followed by the Houses of Knowledge, where the ‘Porto School’ features prominently; the idyllic Houses of Leisure are contrasted with the Houses of Work, with an emphasis on Siza's own studio; and the innovative Houses of Faith link the international Houses of Culture and Regressar a Casa at Serralves.
An extra section is dedicated to the art collection, both mature and from his youth, bridging the important deposits of Tereza Siza and Carlos Castanheira.
