Third session of the film and talks series A Spoken Film: Oliveira's Themes, conceived and moderated by Anabela Mota Ribeiro. This cycle, dedicated to various thematic nuclei present in the work of Manoel de Oliveira, continues with the theme Impotence / Frustration, with a screening of the film Fellini 8 ½ (1963) by Federico Fellini, and will be followed by a conversation with the artist Noé Sendas and the literature professor and writer Raquel Ribeiro, moderated by Anabela Mota Ribeiro.
IMPOTENCE / FRUSTRATION
11 MAY | SATURDAY | 17h00
8 ½ | FELLINI 8 ½
Federico Fellini | ITA | 1963 | 168'
Guests: Noé Sendas (visual artist) and Raquel Ribeiro (literature professor and writer).
One of the most emblematic films of cinematic modernism, whose title refers to the eight feature films and the only short film that Federico Fellini had made so far, Fellini 8 ½ was the filmmaker's response to his creative crisis. With Marcello Mastroianni playing the lead role of Guido Anselmi, a director distressed by the creative difficulties of directing a science fiction film, Fellini 8 ½ is openly self-reflexive, both of filmmaking practice and of its author. The analogy between Guido's frustration and Fellini's creative impotence is made even clearer by the baroque aesthetic that is emphasised through the constant mobility of the camera, the energy of the staging and Nino Rota's constant waltzes. A confessional filmmaker by nature, Fellini's inner weaknesses were overcome by the film's success.
