Ninth session of the cycle dedicated to Manoel de Oliveira's experience as a spectator, with films and film-makers that were important to his career as a cinephile.
MOUCHETTE
Robert Bresson | FRA | 1967 | 81'
Mouchette is set in the final phase of Robert Bresson's career. Based on a novel by Georges Bernanos, the film is about the title character, a young girl from the rural countryside who constantly suffers all kinds of injustices, both at the hands of her alcoholic father and because of the cold and hostile environment in which she finds herself. Like other Bresson films, Mouchette is a tragic and pessimistic portrait, and is also representative of the director's unique approach, based on the denaturalisation of the actors, the elliptical structure and the emphasis on the sound dimension. Oliveira, during the Sight and Sound vote in 2012, rightly chose Mouchette as one of the ten best films in the history of cinema." "Ninth session of the film programme Manoel de Oliveira Espectador, which explores Oliveira's experience as a filmgoer, revisiting films and filmmakers which were essential in his journey as a cinephile.
